You are quite right to say “Before and After”. Perhaps 7 years separated the two photographs, maybe 5 years. I am not sure, not 100 percent sure when each was taken. Lincoln’s emotional life is little understood. But we know that in 1841 he underwent an an emotional crisis, probably related to Mary Todd. And, we know that during his term in Congress he was unhappy.
